Here’s the ZARA Spring Summer 2012 press catalog, which gives us a taste of some of spring’s top runway-to-real-way trends. Some of the trends I can get behind include mint green, sheer fabrics (layered, of course) and floral prints. Some of the trends I can not: Thigh-high slits and mesh. For the reader who recently emailed me with a request for affordable floral print jeans, Zara TRF is your answer (that’s Zara’s lower-priced casual women’s line). Keep scrolling, you’ll see! I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I am ready to give printed pants a try. Who’s with me?

LOFT SUMMER 2012 COLLECTION PREVIEW
Yesterday LOFT held their summer press preview in New York City amidst tropical flowers and fruity drinks, the perfect compliment to the collection’s beach-resort vibe. Brights like turquoise, hot pink, yellow and lime green dominated the vibrant palette, balanced by plenty of crisp clean whites and soothing neutrals. Everything was about ease and warm breezes, from flowy maxi dresses to ikat-print shorts and lightweight tops. Accessories like striped beach totes, raffia clutches, espadrille sandals and stackable thread-wrapped bangles proved to be the perfect finishing touches for this cabana-inspired collection. Take a mini-vacation and browse all the photos taken by KC, my lovely correspondent. I’m obsessed with the belts, striped blazer and embracing the color green. Which pieces are your favorite?
SALVATORE FERRAGAMO PRE-FALL 2012 BY KEESEAN MOORE
In an effort to revive the iconic style of Italy’s haute bourgeoisie Massimiliano Giornetti, creative director at Salvatore Ferragamo, elevated classic 60s silhouettes with rough touches of exotic skins and intriguing appliqués. There were some outstanding geometric prints to choose from, but the true triumph of this collection was Giornetti’s new use of exotic skins. Brushed pony-skin capes; ostrich trenchcoats, pencil skirts, and luggage-like bags all spoke to the house’s mastery of ultra-luxe leathers of all sorts.
The skirts were truly remarkable. Pleated panels of deep mahogany python worked almost like prisms both catching and deflecting light, subtly referencing the unmistakable allure of Italy’s very own strand of sexiness. Like any luxury house in today’s market, accessories are crucial to staying afloat. Gionetti was smart to invest most of his design energy here. In a less-is-more fashion this collection honed in on the Kitten Heel trend, a shape that has had some difficulty in a retail setting. Though we usually like more daring shoes, these were modest while maintaining a hint of mystery. “I liked the idea that they are arriving from a journey, or waiting for one,” Gionetti added as a closing note. “I don’t believe in uniforms. What you see here are mostly daywear separates. I think the joy of dressing is that every day you’re getting up and reinventing yourself.”
DIOR PRE FALL 2012 BY ALEXANDER PATINO
Bill Gaytten shocked the fashion sphere last Fall when his SS12 ready-to-wear collecion for Christian Dior turned out to not be the dreadful tripe everyone had been expecting it to be. In fact, many people liked it, myself included. Pre-Fall finds Gaytten at his best yet, and his quirks and penchants, which were blown up and employed to hyperbolic measure for his last Fall’s Couture showing, have persisted, but not without a good deal of harnessing. Those touches were most apparent in a piebald lattice knit worn with a simple black skirt. The man loves black and white combinations, but even moreso, he lives for geometry (Follow his solo evolution at the house thus far and you will see).
The attempt here seems to be no-fuss Parisienne elegance, but injected with a touch of modernity that Galliano couldn’t seem to wrangle for himself. Galliano, admittedly, had been at a stand-still with Dior. Romance was his forte, but he could hardly blow the dust off such idealistic pursuits. Gaytten on the other hand is at least attempting to play with new fabrications, as evidenced by a fur-collared trench imbued in an oily, metallic organza. Luckily, he tried his luck with silhouette here too. A soft pink cocktail dress with a skirt that doesn’t know if it’s an A-line or a corolla was youthful and sexy, the way Valentino has reexercised its name through Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri. No one has anything bad to say about them. Perhaps, in time, Gaytten might be so lucky.

Next up from JCPenney, here’s the Allen B. by Allen Schwartz spring 2012 lookbook
Next up from JCPenney, here’s the Allen B. by Allen Schwartz spring 2012 lookbook. This line is typically a bit flashier, trendier, more celebrity-influenced and filled with exuberant colors and prints. From off-shoulder tops to chiffon maxi dresses, flared jeans and floppy hats, the line captures a jet-set resortwear vibe. With the exception of the outfit above, I can’t say this particular lookbook appeals to my personal style but it’s always good to have options when you’re shopping the racks at JCPenney. Look for these pieces to be released now through April online and/or at jcp.com. Note that the shoes in this lookbook are by Decree and n by Nicole Miller (other JCP brands) not Allen B. What’s your take?
SNEAK PEEK: TRACY REESE FALL 2012

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is just around the corner, and one of my favorite designers sent us this sneak peek sketch of the collection she’ll be presenting. Here’s a quote about the collection from the designer:
For fall 2012, Reese offers an optimistic color palette of vibrant tomato, juniper green and lemon enlivening neutral browns, grays and black. A mixture of fabric, textures and embellishments create dimension on tailored silhouettes, abundant with refined craftsmanship details. Bold pops of fiery tomato orange energize the classic contrast of black and white, as seen on the Black Box Jacquard Pea Jacket with large leather knot button, and Bi-Level Mini, when paired with the Tomato Falling Leaves Ruched Turtleneck and Black Tomato Gold Mixed Media Pump. A subtle peplum updates a classic mini yet remains flattering and wearable.
